The countdown for the release of the trailer and first episode of my new podcast Connecting the Dots with The Renaissance People is ticking along rapidly!
One step in the creation process is setting up your hosting platform. There, you have to choose which categories your podcast fits under.
I’m thankful they let me pick more than one (we Renaissance People always do better with check boxes than multiple choice when it comes to describing things). But where do you put a podcast about rejecting society’s message to “niche down” and instead, spanning boundaries?
Here’s what I decided.

Lifelong Learners
The “Education” category made absolute sense, but when it came to sub-categories, I settled for “Self-Improvement”. I’m not entirely happy about this as messaging from the “self-help” industry is that there’s something wrong with you. You’re not good enough as you are. Therefore, it is your responsibility to improve yourself.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Renaissance People. Our varied interests may be “too much” for some and may go against what “society” preaches. As David Epstein writes in Range, generalists (aka Renaissance People) strive to “maintain the benefits of breadth, diverse experience, interdisciplinary thinking, and delayed concentration in a world that increasingly incentivizes, even demands, hyperspecialization.
But as the world rapidly changes, and particularly in this age of obsessive AI integration, my goal is to help Renaissance People recognize their increasing value as creative individuals. The “self-improvement” I aim for is the confidence that you don’t have to shrink yourself down to be more palatable for others. You’ll hear perspectives from a wide range of Renaissance People on how they came to embrace and utilize their multi-passionate spirit and where they’ve thrived.
