Girls in STEM – From Pledging Support to Taking Action

I have to be honest, I’m frustrated about progress when it comes to girls in STEM, which I’ve been actively involved with for more than 2 decades.

👩‍🔬 Almost 20 years ago I became a trainer with SciGirls.

☁ Before that, I was a STEM role model as a female TV meteorologist.

➕ Even earlier, I was a girl in STEM myself, participating in my high school math team and taking honors/AP math and science classes.

🎵 As kids, my brother and I belted out “Free to Be You and Me” and thought that girls (and boys) could do anything…

And yet here we are, the needle has barely moved in terms of the percentage of STEM professionals that are women. So it’s great that we’re talking about it, but the time now is for action. Take the pledge and then take the next step.

Check out the National Girls Collaborative resource “The State of Girls in STEM: A Conversation to Plan Action“.

Themes from these conversations include:

🔸 The importance of centering girls’ voices and valuing girls’ unique experiences (intersectionality is critical)

🔸Learning from existing efforts rather than reinventing the wheel

🔸Connecting diverse sectors through collaboration

🔸Shifting the dialogue about STEM to focus on inspiring curiosity in STEM

🔸Changing the messaging about math

🔸Acknowledging the important role corporations play in community engagement.

Which of these actionable steps can YOU take first?
